Can I install laminate over my linoleum in my family room or do I have to remove it first?

The linoleum is sorta textured, not smooth. It's the old floral design.

if it is tight to the floor and not peeling you can go right over it, but I always prefer starting with a clean slate...it's just the right way to do something.
Reply:If the vinyl floor is down and holding good no need to remove it in fact it can help insulate and make a moisture barrier. Any loose ends cut off with a utility knife and float off level with portland cement ardex feather finish is the best, you can get it in 10 lb bags easy to apply. No need to use any cleaners prior to installing you will be laying a foam underlaymnet with a plastic back for protection. Laminates were designed to even go over brick floors originally so texture in the floor is no issue at all. Good Luck.

Tip: check floor for level, use Ardex to level , manufactures usually want 1/8 inch every 10ft for warranty to stay intact.
Reply:The answer is yes, but the things to think about when doing a job like this is; is there any loose pieces, or tears in the old stuff, if so you will need to seal them up, and not just cut them loose, and second you need to make sure that the old flooring is grease and wax free, you can accomplish this with a good cleaner such as T.S.P. and you need to scratch the surface of the old linoleum, this will help the glue adhere better, and the new floor last longer. you can accomplish this by using a Scotch bright pad when cleaning the floor, and don;t forget to rinse the floor after cleaning, a pail of water, and a sponge like you use for grouting works well. One more thing to think about when making your decision, When you put one flooring over another, the new flooring will be a little softer, and will damage easier. Good luck, and take your time to do it right, and always start in the middle. I hope this helps you.
Reply:You can install laminate over linoleum, assuming you floor is level. Make sure you secure loose linoleum with staples or glue!
Reply:no problem with a non glue down (floating) laminate as long as the linoleum has no gaping holes or ridges. most new laminates are installed over a foam base that is not glued down and the laminate floats on it. go for it , laying a new lock joint laminate floor is fun and not messy nor hard to do
Reply:Laminate floors usually have a floating foam base under them...so there is no need to worry about a bad spot in old floor unless it sticks up higher in one place.
