How can I make a model display of cobalt neutrons?

need a display for a project showing the core and all the neutrons and protons. . Can't figure what to use to make the circular rings around the core. Thought of stringing styrofoam balls with wire and shaping into rings then gluing each of the four rings to an upright dowel. Tried 22 gauge wire but too soft to hold shape of a circle with balls on it.. Am considering floral wire. Not sure how to mount the dowel to stand straight. Was told to mount dowel standing in a styrofoam block but afraid it won't hold.

M%26amp;Ms or marshmallows make good protons and neutrons.

A wire coathanger is a great atomic orbital. You may need some pliers to do some cutting to make the smaller energy shells.

A sturdy dowel will bear a few pounds when stuck into a big styrofoam block. What might work better is if you attach your nucleus and orbitals to some chainlink or chickenwire, the stand the chickenwire upright in the styrofoam.
