Can I wear a black and white dress to a wedding?

I am attending a wedding tomorrow night as someone's date. He is in the wedding so he will be dressed in formal attire. Most of the dresses in my closet or black, white, or a combination of the two. I know I can't wear white, and I know some frown upon black. I have two dresses that are black and white. One is mid-calf length with spaghetti straps, mostly black with some white trim. The other is a sleeveless/halter style, just below knee length, with a black and white floral pattern. Could I get away with wearing one of these?? Thanks for your help!

Reply:Perfectly accetable...the last two weddings I attended I wore a black and white dress (a different one each time). Actually at one of the weddings, almost every one of us had on some combination of black, white and silver.



And if everyone had to ask the bride what to wear (as someone suggested), when would the bride have time to actually plan her wedding???
Reply:Traditional wedding ettiquette strongly discourages wearing either all-black or all-white clothing, as all-black is a sign of death and mourning, while all-white is the color the bride will be wearing (major no-no to out-shine the bride!). Of the dresses you discribed, I believe the one with white floral print would be the most acceptable at the "traditional" wedding, since it is most likely a good balance of the two colors.



HOWEVER, you didn't say whether the wedding was a large formal wedding or a small casual wedding. At small weddings, most traditions like that are thrown out the window because the couple is more concerned about your presence rather than your wardrobe. And even at large formal weddings, a tasteful dress that's all black or mostly black with white is considered appropriate. As long as you don't wear all-white, you should be fine.

Reply:I say you wear the one dress you mentioned second with the floral patterns. The other one has too much black for a wedding, but the other one is perfect.
