Southern gardeners: a question about myrtle trees? Can the blossoms be picked the way I used to pick lilacs?

I think the myrtles in bloom right now are stunningly lovely and would be gorgeous indoor floral decoration. I do not wish to harm the trees. Can I cut the blossoms? Do they last or will they die immediately?

They are beautiful! The blossoms last for anywhere from 3 days to a week. Cut stems longish, remove lower leaves and smash lowest 3-4 inches of woody stems with a hammer to help them absorb more water. Change water frequently and enjoy!

Crape myrtles bloom on old wood, so be careful not to cut any new stems--those are next year's flowers!
Reply:Cut away. Most of the crept myrtles will rebloom if you prune the flower heads off during the warm flowering season.

It is like deadheading annuals--the plant is trying to reproduce, cutting the flowers increases flowering.
Reply:You wouldn't harm the trees by cutting the blooms, but the blooms themselves will die almost immediately.

Better off to leave them right where they are...beautifully blanketing your myrtle tree with color.
