I don't want to use a floral arrangment because I have one on my buffet table. I want something different and unique but I don't know what. I would also like to know if I can mix designs like contemporary with traditional and so on.
What can I use as a centerpiece for my dining room table?
A bowl of fruit. Oprah is all about decorating with fruit - REAL fruit, not the fake stuff.
A fun bowl filled with pretty fruit, would look great. Check out www.agreatergift.org for inspiration - look at their bowls (under "Gourmet" and look at baskets - there's all kinds of GREAT ones, for any taste. They are super affordable, and the money is going toward a GREAT cause!
Reply:Wow you've got tons of options not using florals. You could do something with candles.

I have a simple circle of steel that holds eight tea lights and a tall pillar candle sits in the center. I add florals to it for the holidays.
You could do a simple glass centerpiece with some lemons or limes in it depends on the colors in your room. You could also take the glass vase or jar and put colored glass stones in it.

You could do a small zen garden on a tray. Just take a wooden dinner tray that has sides, put sand in the bottom a few rocks and buy a bamboo mini rake at your local craft store to complete the look.
Mixing designs is always great it is called eclectic.
Here's a few ideas from hgtv

If your house is traditional you could go a little country and get a terracotta dish or something similar put dried black eyed peas in to the bowl then nestle tea lights in the container.
Look around your house and see what you have, you'd be amazed at what your options might be.
Have fun!
