In Columbus, OH, Barley's Alehouse sells a summer ale called Hoptopis, with an extreme amount of bitterness (in a good way) and floral sent. The first mouthful almost made me cry. You?
What's the best micro-brew or independent beer you've ever had?
Wow... what does one base their judgment on?
Dogfish Heads marvelous array of extreme beers... 120 Minute... World Wide... Olde School?
Bell's rock solid offerings... Never had one I don't like.
Stone's Arrogant Bastard line... Boldly telling the consumer "you probably won't like this."
Or Founder's palette please mix of Breakfast Stout... Old Curmudgeon and others?
Recently, I went on a tour of New Holland's brewery and the guide was gracious enough to give us a sampling of a beer brewed for a Brewers Association meeting being held at the Brewpub. This beer was never to be released to the public and would never be brewed again... maybe it was the fact it was the exact flavor I'd been searching for weeks... maybe it was the excitement that I was having something that few others could boast to... It was definitely one of the best beers I've ever had... I don't think it even had a name.
Reply:Abita Turbodog from Louisiana.
Don't let the dark color scare you.
It is the best I have tried (excluding seasonal brews).
Best ever is Dominion bourbon stout from Virginia (seasonal).
It is aged in old bourbon casks (it is illegal for bourbon makers to re-use them), the beer picks up the flavor from the bourbon.
Reply:My favorite is Olfabrikken Porter which is made in Denmark.
Also love Stone Ruination IPA, Victory Storm King Stout, and almost everything from Southern Tier.
